Prior to her Saturday show at the Essence Fest, Philly nouveau soul singer Jill Scott had been absent from the stage since her 2010 tour with Maxwell. “I’m a little rusty,” she announced. “I’m glad to see everything is still working.” Cheap Ken Griffey Jr Shoes And how. Scott has evolved a confident, gregarious stage presence, one that the likes of Jennifer Hudson would do well to emulate. As such, Scott was positioned to take full advantage of her skilled, versatile band in a satisfying set that drew heavily on the past for an of-the-moment presentation. Scott looked fabulous in a sparkling top and vintage coif that recalled a jazz singer of the 1940s. She and the nimble band, goosed by a two-man horn section that sounded much larger than its size, also borrowed from the swing era, updating the sound. Scott’s presence at Essence couldn’t be more timely: Her new “The Light of the Sun” album sits at No. 1 on the Billboard chart. Friday was a royal watcher's bonanza, with wedding vows, an official visit — and poignant reminders of princesses past. Ken Griffey Jr Shoes Monaco's Prince Albert II took the plunge with Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock of South Africa, marrying her in a civil ceremony ahead of a religious service Saturday. His father, Prince Rainier III, wed Hollywood actress Grace Kelly in the tiny country 55 years ago. British royal newlyweds Prince William and Kate — the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — won raucous cheers from an estimated 300,000 people while touring Ottawa on Canada's national holiday. It was their first official visit abroad after their widely watched wedding in April. Ken Griffey Jr Shoes 2011 And admirers of the late Princess Diana gathered at the gates of Kensington Palace in London to leave tributes to her and share their memories on what would have been the 50th birthday of "the people's princess." Kathy Martin of Australia who left a tribute at the gates said both Grace and Diana were icons who died in car accidents at a young age — Grace in 1982 and Diana in 1997. Nike Air Max 24 7 "They'll be remembered as princesses — beautiful, radiant princesses," Martin said. Diana also was on the minds of some Canadians in the crowd greeting her son, William, and his wife. "Happy Birthday Lady Di. Canadians love you," read one sign held up during the Canada Day celebrations. The red-and-white-clad crowd chanted "Will and Kate" frequently during their appearance on Parliament Hill to mark Canada's 144th birthday on the second day of the royal visit. Vibram Five Fingers Kate was similarly attired in Canada's colors, wearing a cream dress by the London designer Reiss, complete with a maple leaf brooch, and a brilliant red hat topped with a maple leaf. Queen Elizabeth II loaned the brooch to the duchess for the tour; the queen wore it in 1951 as a princess on her first visit to Canada. William, who wore a blue suit and a red tie, thrilled the crowd as he spoke in English and French for the second day in a row and drew loud cheers when he referred to his grandmother as "the queen of Canada." Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn Friday jumped into the controversy over ads Village Voice Media runs for adult services that have been linked to child prostitution. Village Voice Media owns the Seattle Weekly, which this week features a cover story on Ashton Kutcher and his wife Demi Moore, criticizing them as distorting the extent of the problem of sex-trafficking of minors. Cheap Ken Griffey Jr Shoes In a letter Friday to Village Voice Media CEO Jim Larkin, McGinn said the Seattle Police Department has identified Backpage ads as an "accelerant" of underage prostitution. "I understand that you have existing policies aimed at preventing the trafficking of minors. But the problem remains. It's time to rexamine your policies. We must do better," McGinn's letter said, in part. McGinn's letter and a memo from Police Chief John Diaz accusing Backpage.com and the Village Voice of not doing enough to combat child prostitution, were forwarded to Trevor Neilson, philanthropy adviser to celebrities including Kutcher and Moore. Ken Griffey Jr Shoes 2011 Kutcher tweeted a link to the mayor's webpage, which caused some of his 7 million Twitter followers to flood the city's servers, temporarily knocking out the site for city blogs, said McGinn spokesman Aaron Pickus. Kyle Busch sent him a text this week. Joey Logano called, as did the crew chief for Bobby Labonte. All the drivers at Roush Fenway Racing have been in touch. Radii Footwear As NASCAR returns to Daytona International Speedway for Saturday's Coke Zero 400, Trevor Bayne is no longer the solitary driver who sat on pit road for 30 minutes in February waiting for a partner to take pity and draft with him in the two-car tandems that have become prevalent this season in restrictor-plate races. "Now they're calling asking if they can be on our radio," Bayne said Wednesday. "They know they can trust us. The unknown has been taken away a little bit." Ken Griffey Jr Shoes It changed overnight when Bayne, 20, won the Daytona 500 in his second Sprint Cup start. The Knoxville, Tenn., native was reminded how much the respect level ratcheted up when reviewing a documentary (Daytona 500: The Inside Story) that premiered Thursday night on Discovery's HD Theater. MORE: Sprint Cup standings "Just the other drivers' reactions (to the win); guys I'd been watching my whole life were really supportive," he said. "I thought it was neat." Cheap Ken Griffey Jr Shoes Said 2007 Daytona 500 winner Kevin Harvick: "It's got to be pretty special with everything that he has been through. Everybody at the racetrack becomes your family. Sometimes that is more important than winning any dumb race. It is more about living an everyday life than it is winning a race. He's winning the big race." It's still been an erratic year for Bayne, who is under contract to Roush but was farmed out part time this year to the No. 21 Ford of Wood Brothers Racing in Sprint Cup. He was hospitalized in May after suffering from blurred vision and fatigue (though the ailment wasn't confirmed, Bayne says he was treated for Lyme disease). Ken Griffey Jr Shoes 2011 Being sidelined for more than a month cost Bayne a title shot in the Nationwide Series (where he drives for Roush), but he has posted strong results since returning. At Michigan two weeks ago, he finished fifth in Nationwide and 16th in Cup, his best since Daytona. But he doesn't have a guaranteed spot Saturday. Though his winning car sits in Daytona's trackside museum, Bayne is confident his ride will have speed to qualify, and he'll have the smarts to win again. He spent much of his time in the hospital watching race replays and taking notes on how to improve pit stops, restarts and communication with his crew chief. "I just wanted to amplify and magnify everything we do," he said. "I've just realized the little things all add up." Nike Free Run Nike Air Presto Nike Air Kukini Nike Air Max 24 7
Bank of America Corp., the biggest U.S. bank, said Wednesday that it has agreed to pay $8.5 billion to resolve claims over soured mortgages after bondholders including BlackRock Inc. demanded refunds. Nike Air Yeezy 2011 The settlement will contribute to a second-quarter loss of $8.6 billion to $9.1 billion, or 88 cents to 93 cents a share, the bank said in a statement. Bank of America also said it's adding $5.5 billion to a liability reserve for future loan-repurchase demands and will record $6.4 billion in other charges including legal costs and a write-down of mortgage-unit goodwill. "This is progress in that it puts some parameters around what the total loss will be," said Marty Mosby, an analyst at Guggenheim Securities, which manages more than $100 billion, including Bank of America shares. "It's not a great thing to pay this much, but it's not the worst-case scenario either." Nike Air Yeezy Investors, which also include Pacific Investment Management Co. and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, demanded in October that Bank of America repurchase home loans that had been packaged into bonds by Countrywide Financial Corp., which it acquired in 2008. The settlement covers 530 mortgage trusts with an original loan balance of $424 billion, the bank said. The company's board met Tuesday to discuss the settlement, which still needs court approval. The agreement follows a $3 billion deal announced in January to resolve similar claims from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the U.S.-owned mortgage firms. Bank of America said in April that it agreed to pay an estimated $1.6 billion to resolve claims with bond insurer Assured Guaranty Ltd. Ken Griffey Jr Shoes "This is another important step we are taking in the interest of our shareholders to minimize the impact of future economic uncertainty," Bank of America Chief Executive Officer Brian Moynihan said in the statement. The company will continue to "act aggressively, and in the best interest of our shareholders, to clean up the mortgage issues largely stemming from our purchase of Countrywide." Bank of America declined 19 percent this year through Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange on concern mortgage-related costs, new international capital rules and a slowing U.S. economy will swamp earnings. Cheap Ken Griffey Jr Shoes Costs tied to faulty mortgages have been a moving target for Moynihan, 51. The firm previously said expenses tied to demands from bond buyers other than Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could range from zero to as much as $7 billion to $10 billion. In a May regulatory filing, the lender said that estimate may be $11 billion to $14 billion if it made incorrect assumptions regarding the difficulties investors would face making claims. Ken Griffey Jr Shoes 2011 Countrywide ranked as the top issuer of the securities in 2005, 2006 and 2007, when the worst-performing debt was created, according to Inside MBS & ABS, a newsletter. The lender created $405 billion of the $3.04 trillion of the bonds sold in those years. Bank of America issued $76.9 billion of the securities. Merrill Lynch, which was purchased by the bank at the start of 2009, and First Franklin, which Merrill Lynch bought at the beginning of 2007, issued a combined $116 billion. MOSCOW — As he promoted “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” at the film’s world premiere the other day in the Russian capital, Shia LaBeouf seemed more interested in talking about making a big chunk of the movie in Chicago last summer. Ken Griffey Jr Shoes “At least I didn’t get into trouble on this film,” quipped LaBeouf — referring to his infamous late-night arrest at the Streeterville Walgreens for being publicly intoxicated and refusing to vacate the premises. That happened while he was filming “Eagle Eye” in 2007. At this point, LaBeouf said, “Instead of revisiting that experience with the Chicago police, I’d rather give a great shout-out to the police officers — plus the fire department and former Mayor Daley — for all they did for us to make it possible to make this picture in a way that matched [director] Michael Bay’s vision.” Cheap Ken Griffey Jr Shoes The actor also “could not believe what a festival it was. There were, like, 200,000 people who came out to watch us totally destroy Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive! “I’ve never seen anything like it. … And having those thousands of people there cheering us on really gave us a big boost. It was better than any energy drink.” LaBeouf admitted the second “Transformers” flick was “a disappointment — even if it did make a ton of money.” He’s much happier with the third installment — and insists will be his last outing as Sam Witwicky. Ken Griffey Jr Shoes 2011 “I love the guy,” LeBeouf said, “but I think we’ve wrapped up this series where it should be and on a high note.” The actor was “happily surprised” with Victoria’s Secret model and acting newcomer Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who replaces Megan Fox as his “Transformers” love interest. Genkai, home to a 38-year-old nuclear-power plant, has become ground zero in the battle over Japan's nuclear policy after the country's March 11 earthquake and tsunami unleashed a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi complex. The aftermath of that crisis has left major Japanese cities short of electricity and fractured a decades-old consensus over the safety of nuclear power in general and the country's older reactors in particular. Redwing Shoes outlet Kyushu Electric Power Co., which operates the Genkai plant, had two of the complex's four reactors down for routine maintenance when the March quake hit northern Japan. In recent weeks, fierce local opposition has prevented the plant, which isn't on an active fault line and isn't seen as vulnerable to a Fukushima-size tsunami wave, from restarting its reactors No. 2 and No. 3. Vibram Shoes As of earlier this month, 37 of Japan's 54 reactors were idle. Like Genkai's, many were powered down as part of a Japanese law that requires reactors to be taken offline for maintenance after every 13 months of operation. After the Fukushima Daiichi crisis, many reactors have been kept offline as local governments press operators to provide additional safety assurances. While local cities or prefectures can't by law keep operators from repowering their reactors, their blessing is in fact vital in consensus-seeking Japan. Clarks Shoes Kyushu Electric has warned that failure to bring the Genkai reactors back online for peak summer demand means the entire Japanese main island of Kyushu could lose up to 15% of its normal electricity supply. View Full Image ."We have already taken some measures and are implementing more" to address local concerns, said company spokesman Minoru Yasueda. "We are explaining those efforts to local people to get their understanding." Ken Griffey Jr Shoes Meanwhile, temperatures in parts of eastern Japan neared 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday, with Tokyo temperatures hitting the mid-80s. Yasushi Furukawa, the governor of surrounding Saga prefecture, hasn't given his nod to restarting the reactors despite intense pressure from the central government and business interests. Officials from several municipalities around Genkai have urged Gov. Furukawa to hold off until a prefectural assembly special committee makes recommendations, which they say is unlikely before August. Cheap Ken Griffey Jr Shoes "We have lost our sense of faith in government promises about the safety of nuclear power after Fukushima," said Toshiyuki Sakai, the mayor of Karatsu City, whose 400-year-old feudal castle stands less than 10 miles from the Genkai plant. A year ago, Tokyo instituted a new Basic Energy Plan calling for nuclear power to account for 53% of Japan's electricity generation by 2030, up from 30% prior to the March quake. Prime Minister Naoto Kan has said that target will now have to be reassessed, but it isn't clear how far government and industry are willing to scale back their nuclear ambitions. Nike Air Max Despite the angst in Karatsu and other Japanese towns that border nuclear plants, Genkai itself is campaigning to restart the reactors as soon as mid-July. That's when the town's mayor says he plans to formally ask the plant's operator to run all four reactors at the facility, two of which are already active. "It's important to provide a stable supply of power," said Genkai Mayor Hideo Kishimoto. "We've lived in the shadow of the plant for 38 years, so we may have a better appreciation of its safety measures." Air Max 2011 Once dependent on its onion fields and catch of red snapper, Genkai has benefited from nuclear energy in the form of subsidies and tax revenue that make up 65% of its budget. Nuclear-related workers account for about 10% of its 6,500 population. Yet even Genkai has longtime critics of the plant who want the reactors shut down permanently, no matter the cost to town coffers. "A lot of people here don't like the plant but are afraid to speak out because of the money and jobs it provides," said Akira Fujiura, a local assemblyman and part-time farmer. Nike Air Max 2009 Karatsu City, which abuts Genkai and whose outskirts are less than a mile from the plant, gets less than 1% of its budget from nuclear-related central government subsidies and tax revenue. The company’s technology allows a picture’s focus to be adjusted after it is taken. While viewing a picture taken with a Lytro camera on a computer screen, you can, for example, click to bring people in the foreground into sharp relief, or switch the focus to the mountains behind them. Cheap Redwing Shoes But is Lytro’s technology just a neat feature, or is it the next big thing in cameras? The founding team of the Silicon Valley start-up and investors who have put in $50 million are betting on the latter. The technology has won praise from computer scientists and raves from early users of its prototype camera. Redwing Shoes outlet “We see technology companies all the time, but it’s rare that someone comes along with something that is this much of a breakthrough,” said Ben Horowitz, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz, a major investor in Lytro. “It’s superexciting.” Redwing Shoes outlet Lytro’s founder and chief executive is Ren Ng, 31. His achievement, experts say, has been to take research projects of recent years — requiring perhaps 100 digital cameras lashed to a supercomputer — and squeeze that technology into a camera headed for the consumer market later this year. Clarks Shoes Mr. Ng explained the concept in 2006 in his Ph.D. thesis at Stanford University, which won the worldwide competition for the best doctoral dissertation in computer science that year from the Association for Computing Machinery. Since then Mr. Ng has been trying to translate the idea into a product that can be brought to market — and building a team of people to do it. Nike Air Max The Lytro camera captures far more light data, from many angles, than is possible with a conventional camera. It accomplishes that with a special sensor called a microlens array, which puts the equivalent of many lenses into a small space. “That is the heart of the breakthrough,” said Pat Hanrahan, a Stanford professor, who was Mr. Ng’s thesis adviser but is not involved in Lytro. Air Max 2011 But the wealth of raw light data comes to life only with sophisticated software that lets a viewer switch points of focus. This allows still photographs to be explored as never before. “They become interactive, living pictures,” Mr. Ng said. He thinks a popular use may be families and friends roaming through different perspectives on pictures of, say, vacations and parties posted on Facebook (Lytro will have a Facebook app). Nike Air Max 2009 For a photographer, whether amateur or professional, the Lytro technology means that the headaches of focusing a shot go away. Richard Koci Hernandez, a photojournalist, said that when he tried out a prototype earlier this year, he immediately recognized the potential impact. “You just concentrate on the image and composition, but there’s no need to worry about focus anymore,” Mr. Hernandez said. “That’s something you do later.” Nike Air Max 2010 Nike Air Max 24 7 Nike Air Max 90 Nike Air Yeezy
